THE FARMER AND THE WELL STORY

THE FARMER AND THE WELL

A farmer needed a water source for his farm, so he bought a well from his neighbor. However, the neighbor was clever. The next day when the farmer came to take water from his well, the neighbor refused to let him take water.

When the farmer asked why, the neighbor replied “I have sold you the well, not the water,” and walked away. Disappointed, the farmer went to the emperor to seek justice. The farmer told the whole story to the emperor

The king called Birbal, the most intelligent among his nine courtiers. Birbal asked the neighbor, “Why don’t you let the farmer take water from the well? You have sold the well to the farmer

Then the neighbor replied, “Birbal, I have sold the well to the farmer but not its water. He has no right to draw water from the well.”

Then Birbal said, “Look, because you have sold the well, you have no right to keep water in the farmer’s well. Either you pay the tax to the farmer or withdraw it immediately.” Realizing that his plan had failed, the neighbor apologized to the farmer and went to his home.
